Opened on 31st January 1950 by Mr G. A. Osborne, G.T.C. was operational until April 1, 1977, when it officially became the School of Education, Deakin University. The College's motto was "a posse ad esse" - from possibility to actuality. Originally designed to be a quarterly publication, Kardinia (an indigenous word for "sunrise") evolved into the College's yearbook. It contained photographs and stories about significant events, class lists and photographs of the year's student intake, and articles of an academic or humorous bent. The collection is a small selection of photographs from the early 1950s. As one of Deakin University's many antecedent institutions, the College's records are held by Deakin University Archives for the benefit of interested researchers and alumni. The image celebrates the first round of final examinations for the College's foundation year students. This edition includes photographs, sports results and articles (both serious and satirical) that highlight the year's events. The magazine committee write that the College's beginnings have not been without their "difficulties. Some we have surmounted, some we have not but we leave it in the hands of succeeding students to carry on where we have left off." To the College's first "Exies", the Principal, L.G. Whiteoak, poses the following questions: "Are you fully aware of the exalted place the teacher must strive to fill in the community? Are you conscious of the serious responsibility laid upon your shoulders, and have you acquired a determination to make yourself entirely worthy of that responsibility?"
