Deakin University has generously provided funding for the digitisation of the Geelong Advertiser. These newspapers can be accessed through Trove, a significant National Library of Australia (NLA) project. It was through using this valuable resource that an interesting character – known by his nom de plume D.O.D. (whose name was actually Henry Charles Dod) – made himself known.
Reading his articles in the newspaper provided delightful and interesting insights into life in Victoria and beyond between 1854 and 1925 and, combined with other research resources held by the Alfred Deakin Prime Ministerial Library (ADPML), led to further discoveries about his life and that of his extended family.
